Hafnarhús, located in downtown Reykjavik, serves as the Reykjavik Art Museum’s institute of contemporary art. New developments in art are explored through diverse exhibitions of Icelandic and international artists. An exhibition of paintings by the Pop artist Erró is a permanent feature. Hafnarhús has a restaurant with a beautiful view over the harbour.

The museum shop on the ground floor offers a selection of local and international art books, catalogues and other printed items. Postcards, gift cards and posters with reproductions of art from the collection is also available. Various art and craft objects are on offer, as well as quality castings from selected works by the Icelandic sculptor Asmundur Sveinsson. The shop is open at the same time as the museum.

In 1989 Erró (b.1932) presented the City of Reykjavik with a large collection of his works. Among these were paintings, watercolours, graphic works, sculptures, collages and other works of art that span the whole artistic career of Erró, all the way back to his childhood. In addition Erró presented the city with invaluable materials that all relate to his career as an artist.

The Erró Collection now consists of more than 4500 art works. This Collection has a permanent residence at the Hafnarhús where it is presented with different retrospective exhibitions.
